1980s Columbia Combo Elepian EP-7C Vintage Electric Piano, Japan

1980s Columbia Combo Elepian EP-7C Vintage Electric Piano, Japan

Up for sale, a 1980s Columbia Combo Elepian EP-7C electric piano in near-mint condition and in perfect working order. Nippon Columbia is a Japanese musical instrument manufacturer with a long, storied history beginning with early phonographs in the first few decades of the 20th century, eventually transitioning to electric guitars and lap steels in the ‘50s and ‘60s and, eventually, entering the world of electronic instruments in the ‘70s and ‘80s with entries like the EP-7C.

An exceedingly rare and equally obscure vintage electric piano, finding an Elepian outside Japan furthers the unicorn status of this piano, with extremely limited distribution for these pianos beyond their country of origin.

Essentially a Japanese-made hybrid of a Rhodes and Wurlitzer both in terms of its design and tone, the piano has a more comprehensive active preamp than either of its US-based contemporaries, with a three-band EQ in addition to Volume and Tremolo controls. The lows are round and mellow, with just a touch of growl when digging in, while the trebles are clear and crisp with an overarching percussive, melodic, and sweet sound. The EP-7C features 75 keys (6 octave range), with pulsing on-board Tremolo and a proprietary sustain pedal that packs itself neatly into the enclosure for transport. It’s a design that’s clearly designed for rigorous road use, setting up and folding down easily with reinforced enclosure edges.

This EP-7C has been professionally serviced here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, balanced and detailed across all notes with level keys that have a smooth, even response. Exceedingly clean, the key caps are bright white, the graphics are pristine, and there’s sparingly little wear on the enclosure.
