2024 Gibson Custom 1957 SJ-200 Murphy Lab Light Aged Vintage Sunburst, Mint w/ Case, Tags
Tom Murphy, the Master Artisan and namesake of Gibson's Murphy Lab, was central to the creation of the Gibson Custom Shop and personally developed the various processes on display for aging the finish, hardware and plastics of these instruments. With a quarter century in the saddle, Murphy is a celebrated authority for replicating the character of vintage instruments on the canvas of newly-created guitars.
This Murphy Lab iteration of the SJ-200 features a thermally aged Sitka spruce top with traditional hand-scalloped X bracing, AAA flame maple back/sides, two-piece AAA flame maple neck, hot hide glue construction, and bone nut/saddle/bridge pins. The model described by Gibson as "King of the Flat-tops" is truly an impressive instrument both visually and sonically, and few acoustic instruments can match the sheer projection and power of an SJ-200. With a lower bout that's 17" in width and a body depth of over 4 1/2", the tone of this particular Gibson is extremely bold, full and even-sounding, with equal presence and power afforded each string. Weighing 4lbs 9oz, this Custom 1957 SJ-200 Reissue Murphy Lab Light Aged has been dialed in beyond the factory setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action.
