1964 Fender Twin Reverb Pre-CBS Black Panel Tube Amp w/ Jensen C12N, Victoria Cover & Ftsw
The circuit is extremely original save for a professional recap of the power supply and three-prong cable, and this Twin's condition is all the more uncommon given its size. While Fender's smaller combos of the era can occasionally be found in pristine shape, it's significantly rarer to find Fender's gig-worthy large combos (which generally saw much rougher usage) as well-kept as this example.
Via a vintage matched quad of RCA 6L6GC power tubes, this Twin delivers warm, articulate cleans with ample bass response, a wide-ranging and responsive EQ, and present, sparkling Fender top end. When it comes to the quintessential Black Panel Fender amp for clarity, headroom, and the balanced, authoritative response of a four 6L6 driven tube amp, it's hard to beat the Twin. The tube-driven Reverb effect has incredible depth and splash, and the Tremolo has a strong pulse with a wide range of speeds. It's as iconic a design as Leo Fender ever created, also very well-suited to amplifying pedal steel or electric piano in the vein of a Wurlitzer or Fender Rhodes.
All of the original Schumacher-made transformers are present, with date codes from 1963, and the preamp retains all of the original blue molded Ajax capacitors, responsible for the sweet, musical character of the Black Panel-era preamps. The original Stackpole pots have visible date codes spanning the 34th to 40th weeks of ‘63, and the preamp is stock save for some premium low noise metal film resistors and a couple small electrolytic caps. The power supply has been professionally recapped, and a modern three-prong cable has been installed. The power tubes are a quad of properly biased vintage RCA 6L6GCs, and the preamp includes a combination of Groove Tubes and Magic Parts valves.
The speakers are the original matched pair of Jensen C12Ns with black frames. This particular cosmetic variant of the C12N was only used in the earliest Twins, and the Jensens have a distinctive hi-fi clarity. The date codes on the edge of the speaker frames are from the 16th and 44th weeks of '63. The tube chart is clean and fully intact, with an "NA" date stamp that translates to January of 1964.
The original black tolex is exceptionally clean, with barely a mark on the edges of the enclosure, and the silver sparkle grillcloth shows very minimal aging. The faceplate is notably well-kept, with its first year Black Panel "Fender Elect. Inst. Co" text, retaining the full complement of original witch hat knobs. All of the original hardware is present, including the chrome tilt back legs, nickel corners, chassis straps, sphinx glides (feet), handle caps, and Fender logo on the amp's face.
The original two-button footswitch and Victoria Luggage slip cover are included.
